Shoulder Screws

Shoulder screws (also called shoulder bolts or stripper bolts) are used for spacing and surface bearing for many applications. They are particularly useful in pulleys, gears, rolling wheels, and other mechanical assemblies since the should of this screw remains above the hole which allows for rotation of connected parts. They can also be attached to stripper plates allowing for high torque fastening with narrow clearance.

Used most often as a spacer or for surface bearing, shoulder screws are uniquely designed with a long, cylindrical middle section referred to as a shoulder. The shoulder is intended to be wider than the screw section and narrower than the head.

We offer shoulder screws in a variety of styles including cap hex shoulder screws, male-female shoulder screws, slotted shoulder screws, and socket shoulder screws.

CAD files for stock and standard shoulder screws are available in our online store.

CUSTOM MANUFACTURING

Custom Shoulder Screws

We offer a variety of head styles, finishes, threading options, and size combinations and can customize precision fasteners for virtually any environment or application. Our facilities produce precision components to exacting tolerances using state-of-the-art tools and equipment along with a team of more than 100 design and engineering specialists with the knowledge and solutions needed to ensure that you get the right part for your application.

Our shoulder screws come in standard and metric sizes with threads ranging from 4-40 to 3/8-16, shoulder lengths from 0.1250″ to 1.500″ (3mm - 38mm), and shoulder diameters from 0.1245″ to 0.650″ (3mm - 17mm). Head diameters usually range from 1/4″ to 5/8″ (6mm - 16mm), and we can create overall lengths up to 4" (101mm).

Shoulder Screw Manufacturing

MW Components manufactures components in over 20 facilities across the US with a wide range of production capabilities, including precision machining and cold forming. Shoulder screws produced using cold forming are made by compressing the metal material with a large amount of force. This process adds to the overall strength of the component as opposed to traditional machining which removes material, making the part weaker. Due to the fact that it's not a deductive process, cold forming is also advantageous when material waste needs to be kept at a minimum. In many cases, the reduction or elimination of material waste can greatly reduce material costs, leading to a lower per-part cost.

MW Components manufacturers custom shoulder screws to precise tolerances, including shoulder diameters of +.000/-.001 and shoulder lengths of +.002/-.000. Our shoulder screws also have undercuts on each side of the shoulder assure. This allows for perfect seating for precise, low friction assembly.
